Daylight saving time change. Drivers, be careful! An hour less can harm you behind the wheel

25. 3. 2023

We have to deal with this every spring and every autumn. One time we move the time an hour forward, another time an hour back. Drivers especially should be more careful now. The current change to daylight saving time can have a very negative effect on our attention.

Although it has been discussed for several years that the time change should be abandoned, there has not been any solution yet. 84% of voters in a pan-European survey spoke in favour of ending the clock changing. So far, however, individual countries have not been able to agree on unification.

The original intention related to the change of time probably lacks any meaning today. Its goal was to save electricity. When we move the time one hour forward at the end of March, it gets darker later in the evening, and thanks to that we turn on the lights later. According to many economists, this is no longer true nowadays.

However, the negative impact of the daylight saving time shift is clear. Poorer adaptation to the new time and less quality sleep are to blame. This is often the cause of a higher number of traffic accidents. This is evident in several Czech and foreign statistics. And it makes sense. We feel more tired, our reflexes behind the wheel are not as good, we are likely to be more irritable and we are generally less attentive.

Therefore, definitely do not neglect anything. It is better go to bed an hour or more earlier. Have quality rest. And at least a week after the time change, be more cautious than usual.
